2009 Keplinger Sumo
The 2009 Sumo showcases dark aromatics, richness, and copious but supple tannins – living up to its name. Harvested in early October, we only had one small lot, which was co-fermented with Viognier, blended with a touch of Syrah, and aged in once-used 320L French Burgundian cooperage. The 2009 Sumo is a blend of 75% Petite Sirah, 20% Syrah, and 5% Viognier, all from the rocky slopes of Shake Ridge Vineyard. The nose is layered with roasted meat, blackberry, iodine, dried white flowers, and dark chocolate. On the palate, the black fruit is accompanied by salted caramel, white pepper, pencil shavings, and ink. The mouth feel is massive but silky, with plush, rich tannins and great length. DJ calls it “the velvet sledgehammer.”
