2009 Keplinger Red Slope
The 2009 Red Slope Grenache is a wine of gorgeous intensity, balanced by fresh acidity and ample structure that will allow it to age gracefully. Red Slope hails from a steep, rocky, mountain vineyard with red volcanic soil at 1000’ elevation in the southwest corner of the Knights Valley AVA. The combination of moderated daytime temperatures, wind, southwest exposure, and rocky clay-based soils make this an exceptional spot for producing truly incredible Grenache. The grapes were harvested October 9th and fermented in French oak puncheons. It was pressed after 30 days directly to barrel, and aged for 18 months in large format French oak (20% new) before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. In the nose, it is very tightly wound, with layers of black cherries, pomegranate, orange peel, black tea, dried white flowers, and pencil shavings. Dried aromatic herbs follow as the wine opens – sage, garrigue, star anise, and ginger. Lovely volume on the palate framed by polished tannins and lively acidity, with great length. It will age beautifully. 180 cases produced.
