2009 Keplinger Kingpin Rows
This is our fourth vintage of the Kingpin Rows Syrah, which hails from Pelkan Ranch Vineyard in the southwest corner of Knights Valley, located high atop the western ridge. We have kept our hand-selected 3 rows of Syrah in the upper end of the mountaintop block picked for their soil, exposure, evenness, and balance – the kingpin rows. These rows are farmed with extra special attention to achieve uniformity and balance and grow grapes of great concentration and flavor. The 2009 Syrah was picked October 2nd and divided into two small fermentation lots. After 40 days on the skins, the Syrah was pressed directly to barrel, aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak, and bottled without fining or filtration. This wine has a dense core of blue and black fruit, oil-cured black olives, bittersweet chocolate, and iodine. As the wine opens, the higher aromatics are unwound – gardenia, black peppercorn, nutmeg, balsamic, and cigar tobacco. The entry is insanely silky, with plush, yet firm tannins and a very long finish. 80 cases produced.
