2009 Keplinger Basilisk
This is our first vintage of the Basilisk, 100% Grenache, which is planted on a super-steep, very rocky hillside in the Russian River. The vineyard is a curious combination of a warm site located in a cool region – a warm spot at a bend in the Russian River. The soil is an ancient seafloor uplifted by less ancient volcanic activity – rocky and poor, and perfect for producing intense Grenache. The grapes were picked October 10th, fermented in a puncheon, drained and pressed 30 days later to a neutral French barrel where it aged for 18 months before being bottled without fining or filtration. The aromatics are intense – raspberry, kirsch, blood orange, slate, smoke, fresh porcini, bergamot, rose petal, coriander. It is high-toned with delicate earthiness and bright acidity, a core of tightly-wound red fruit, floral notes, and exotic spices – all backed by chewy tannins and a long finish. It will reward patience and cellaring. This is a pure reflection of this special vineyard. 35 cases produced.
