2007 Keplinger N=1

2007 was such an extraordinary year - a vintage that produced wines of great complexity, depth, immediate gratification and longevity. Our 2007 Knights Valley Grenache was a prime and impressive example of this - insanely intense and tightly-wound, with concentrated layers and a plethora of fine-grained tannins. It begged for time. Always game for experimentation, we relented, selecting one 600L barrel to age for another year. This wine is the first iteration of this experiment, hence the name "N=1," and it will only be repeated in truly exceptional vintages. Coming from a single, rocky, mountain-top vineyard in Knights Valley, the Grenache grapes were harvested on October 9, with 21 days on skins before being pressed directly to barrel. This wine spent 30 months in a new French Demi Muids barrel before being bottled in April 2010 - never racked, fined, nor filtered. It was aged in bottle for another year before its release. The result: the 2007 N=1 shows gorgeous complexity and finesse, offering layers of blood orange, bergamot, crushed slate, bing cherry, garrigue, jasmine, cardamom. The fine tannins have further resolved, giving this wine incredible silkiness and tremendous length.
